The HTL Guide to Autumn Style
Stop whatever you’re doing. Look around. Inhale. Can you feel it? Pavements and parks are better dressed than they’ve been all year, it’s pitch black at 5pm (boo, hiss) and the cooling afternoons are perfumed by the collective scent of a thousand Pumpkin Spiced Lattes. It’s official: autumn’s here – and she’s bringing out the big guns.
The long, lazy summer months get a lot of heat – both literally and otherwise – but at HTL, we know that there’s a whole host of fashion magic to be found in this snuggliest of seasons. Sure, those go-to cutoffs and crops might be rendered obsolete until May – but their seasonal replacements are in a league all of their own.
Yep – we’re officially in a knitwear state of mind. Luxuriously soft knitwear; deliciously decadent piles of cashmere and wool; chic Gallic polonecks and enormously enveloping boyfriend jumpers that feel as close to a hug as clothing ever will. Or there are coats. Glamorously structured suede! Elegant wool pea coats! Coats with huge fur collars or thick fleece linings! Autumnal clothes are intimate and inviting; they feel familiar and welcoming; like a large glass of Merlot in front of a roaring fire at the end of a long work day, or hot buttered toast and tea on a cold Sunday afternoon (both of which, might we add, are tres autumnal, as far as pleasures go).
And that’s just the textures. When it comes to *fierce lewks*, no-one knows the ropes better than Mother Nature herself, whose turn-of-the-season show is as yet unrivalled in its fiery magnitude. It’s right about now that her sultry shades really burst into life; think forest and emerald greens, earthy ochres, deep scarlets and burnt sienas – rich jewel-tones that, quite frankly, we’d be fools not to try and mimic through our own sartorial choices. As mere mortals, we’re sadly lacking in the leaf department – but we do have fashion.
Part of the appeal of autumnal style is that it lends itself so well to that deceptively rustic and polished brand of effortless elegance we all love so much (think Rosie Huntington-Whiteley strolling cosily around Central Park, and you’re around the right postcode). Vogue’s top picks for AW17 includes flattering 1970s inspired pieces such as mid-length skirts teamed with knee length boots, tweed textures and dressage inspired trouser suits for a glamorously tailored way to ring in a fresh new season.
Layering, blanket wraps, huge wraparound scarves, luxe velvety cashmeres, and boots in every shape and style will also continue to rule the autumn roost as long as Spiced Lattes are an autumn five-a-day (i.e. forever). But can’t yet bring yourself to wave goodbye to those sugary summer pastels? You’ll be pleased to hear that mid-blues are set to be big news this season, with plenty of the big labels showcasing light sweaters and slouchy cardigans in this complexion-pleasing shade.
Lastly, before you consign your summer jumpsuits to the loft for winter, team ‘em with a blouse or rib knit polo to see them seasonally repurposed. It’s what Mother Nature would have wanted.
And lest we forget – autumn is absolutely a party for the face as well as the wardrobe. Hear us out. Remember those gorgeous seasonal shades we mentioned earlier? They’re tailor made for make-up too and universally flattering. The Huda Beauty Warm Brown Obsessions Palette contains a collection of nine pigment-packed eye powders with matte and foil-effect textures in a range of browns, golds and warm rust shades – and it’s practically guaranteed to reboot your autumn eye makeup game. Apply a light gold between the eyelid and brow with a rich chocolate brown on the eyelid for a smouldering evening look that says the nights are getting colder but this face is definitely getting hotter. Miaow.
To ramp up the seasonal drama, create a lip in deep reds, plums or burnt oranges – or for a more natural daytime look, pale dusky browns and mauves have near-magical powers to warm up the skin (while matching up with pretty much any other shades). Cheeks in autumn should be as hot as Bonfire-night in pretty peaches and resplendent raspberries – in fact, Vlogger Casey Holmes recently demonstrated how to expertly create a glowy, glam autumn look using the dusky Tartlette toasted palette and a set of Smashbox brushes.
Heat up your Autumn wardrobe Happy Autumn-ing, angels. See you on the other side.
